Specialist, 20th and 21st Century Art, China

About the role

Christie's is looking for a Specialist in 20th and 21st Century Art, China, based in Beijing. The role brings in business, catalogues and coordinates the sale and property of works, working closely with a global team of specialists.

Key responsibilities

• Build and maintain relationships with collectors, dealers, corporations and institutions, including major clients buying high-value property
• Take part in sourcing and selling the department's sales
• Act as liaison with overseas specialists and the CDD group, using appraisals to generate new business and reconnect with inactive clients
• Review photo inquiries with the department to assess sale potential and value (pricing sessions)
• Write catalogue essays and research properties, including authenticity, bibliography, provenance and exhibition history
• Work on catalogue production and layout, and prepare condition reports before auction
• Take part in telephone bidding, coordinate pre-sale exhibitions and help buyers market and pre-sell during sale week
• Run targeted pre-selling campaigns, prepare press and marketing materials, and visit competitors' auctions
• Represent Christie's at events and art fairs, and carry out special projects and other duties assigned by the Manager

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Art History; M.A. preferred
• Chinese language proficiency required
• At least 5 years of paid experience in a related field
• Knowledge of the auction business and demonstrated ability to appraise property and generate business
• Excellent communication, client service, follow-up and multi-tasking skills, able to work in a team

Required skills

• Microsoft Office (email, spreadsheets, word processing and presentations)
• Ability to learn Christie's systems (COS, JDE, intranet and website)
