Mechanical Engineer – R&D for Drilling Rigs

About the role

As a Mechanical Engineer in Epiroc’s Underground Division R&D team, you will design and develop large structural components and mechanisms for drilling rigs and related equipment, ensuring they meet quality, delivery and cost targets.

Key responsibilities

• Design structural components and mechanisms for UMR products that are practical, efficient, and compliant with design guidelines and regulations.
• Create and maintain precise 3D and 2D CAD drawings using Creo throughout the product lifecycle.
• Prepare comprehensive design documentation, calculations, and bills of materials for assemblies and sub‑assemblies.
• Select suitable materials and specify manufacturing processes such as welding, machining, painting, casting, and forging.
• Collaborate with sourcing teams to qualify and evaluate suppliers for product standards and sustainability.
• Provide mechanical technical support to production teams and field service centers, troubleshooting issues promptly.
• Lead or participate in initiatives for new technology development, product improvement, cost reduction, and localization.
• Engage with cross‑functional teams to foster innovation and maintain market competitiveness.
• Undertake additional tasks and projects assigned by management to support business goals.

Required profile

• Demonstrated experience designing large structural components and drilling‑rig working devices.
• Proficiency in 3D/2D design and drafting, preferably with Creo.
• Working knowledge of relevant industry regulations and standards.
• Familiarity with material selection and manufacturing processes (welding, machining, painting, casting, forging).
• Track record of product innovation with positive customer or market feedback.
• Experience with product lifecycle management tools such as Teamcenter (a plus).
• Strong command of English or a clear commitment to learn the language.
• Willingness to travel to challenging environments, including underground mines and construction sites.
• Advanced proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and presentations.
