Associate or Senior Editor – Communications Sustainability

About the role

We are seeking an Associate or Senior Editor with research experience in environmental sciences applied to sustainability to join Communications Sustainability, a multidisciplinary open‑access journal that publishes high‑quality research across natural, social sciences and engineering.

Key responsibilities

• Select and develop manuscripts for publication, ensuring they meet the journal’s editorial policy.
• Critically evaluate scientific content, assess novelty and relevance, and guide authors on improving titles, abstracts and structure.
• Coordinate the transfer of accepted papers to production in a complete state.
• Recommend manuscripts for press releases and draft the releases.
• Recruit, train and support external editors, fostering alignment with the journal’s philosophy.
• Represent the journal at conferences, meetings and research institutions, reporting on activities.
• Provide input to advertising and marketing teams and create editorial content for special projects.

Required profile

• PhD‑level research experience in environmental sciences with strengths in analytical or computational methods such as remote sensing, spatial analysis or systems/integrated assessment modelling.
• Editorial or post‑doctoral experience is advantageous.
• Strong passion for science, excellent communication skills and fluency in English.
• Ability to assess the novelty, context and implications of interdisciplinary research.
