R&D Software Engineer – Building Automation (BMS)

About the role

ABB is looking for a Building Automation R&D Software Engineer in Beijing, reporting to the R&D Department/Local Unit Lead. The role sits within the Smart Building division and focuses on the Building Management System (BMS). It is an onsite position.

Key responsibilities

• Analyze building automation requirements and design the upper-level software architecture, including front-end interface, communication module, data processing and microservice backend.
• Integrate the BACNET protocol with other industrial protocols (e.g., Modbus, OPC UA) so device data can be collected and controlled in real time.
• Build a cross-platform (Windows/MacOS) monitoring interface with Electron, using React/Vue for interaction logic.
• Develop microservice back-end services covering device management, data storage and alarm processing.
• Develop or integrate the BACNET protocol stack to communicate with equipment such as air conditioning, lighting and energy systems.
• Debug the upper computer system with on-site controllers and sensors, write test cases, optimize performance and fix compatibility and real-time issues.
• Optimize the software architecture for scalability, security and user experience, and write technical documentation and support the team.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree or above in Computer Science, Automation, Building Automation Control or similar.
• More than 3 years of software development experience in building automation (BMS) or industrial automation, with knowledge of BMS architectures such as distributed monitoring and data centre management.
• Deep understanding of the BACNET protocol (ANSI/ASHRAE 135) and experience in protocol development or integration.
• Familiarity with TCP/IP and serial communication; Modbus and MQTT experience is preferred.
• Ability to work with hardware, testing and other teams, and to analyze complex system issues independently.

Required skills

• Cross-platform desktop apps with Electron; front-end with JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML5, CSS3, React/Vue.
• Microservice architecture with Spring Cloud, Docker and Kubernetes.
• Backend development (Node.js, Java, Python) and databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, time-series databases).
• Bonus: OPC UA, Matter, ECharts/D3.js, EMS and energy efficiency analysis, open-source contributions or technical blogs.
