Director of Research

About the role

AB Global is hiring a VP/Director of Research in Shanghai, reporting to the SVP/Chief Investment Officer and working within the Investment & Research team. Research defines the culture of AB Equities and underpins its collaborative investment decision-making, with analysts covering developed and emerging markets from offices in New York, London, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, Taipei, Sydney and Melbourne.

Key responsibilities

• Research and investment (50%-60%): gather in-depth insights from the global fundamental research team, potentially grow into a portfolio manager starting from cloned strategies, lead local research for onshore projects, and meet with research providers, data vendors and industry leaders.
• Business development (25%-35%): act as the ambassador of AB Equity research, meet with gatekeepers, institutional investors and media, and collaborate with marketing, product development and sales on new product design.
• Regulatory duty (~10%): help onshore teams build processes that meet onshore regulatory requirements.
• People and culture (~5%): promote diversity and inclusion, act as a role model and carry the omni-channel communication culture between Shanghai and other AB offices, and uphold fiduciary obligations and the Code of Conduct.

Required profile

• MBA or comparable degree, and/or 8+ years of business experience in investment management.
• Preferably generalist equities research experience; experience with systematic portfolio construction is preferred.
• Fluent Mandarin and business-level English.
• Willingness to travel for client meetings and roadshows.

Required skills

• Deep knowledge of the Chinese capital market and the FMC industry; knowledge of global capital markets is a plus.
• Clear written and verbal communication, able to work independently and in a team in a fast-changing environment.
• Passion for ongoing learning and development.
