Senior Electrical Engineer - PMSM Design

About the role

ABB's Traction Division is hiring a Senior Electrical Engineer in Shanghai, within the MOTR/R&D department and reporting to the R&D Senior Engineer. The role contributes to project results in technology, software, product and solution development, including associated intellectual property, and acts as the first point of contact in R&D for product-related issues and maintenance. The work model is onsite.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the end-to-end electromagnetic and thermal design and validation of liquid-cooled permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), from concept to production.
• Use ANSYS Maxwell and Motor-CAD for multi-electric and thermal simulation and design optimisation.
• Drive design optimisation to meet targets for performance, cost and reliability.
• Work closely with the systems and controls team on motor-controller matching and integration; familiarity with ABB drive products is an asset.

Required profile

• Master's degree or above in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
• 5+ years in PMSM design, preferably for off-road, automotive or railway applications.
• Solid understanding of motor manufacturing processes and material characteristics.
• Knowledge of motor-controller matching and system integration requirements.
• Familiarity with control algorithms or embedded software is a plus.
• Strong problem-solving skills, ability to work independently, and ability to guide junior engineers and collaborate across teams.
