Mechanical Engineer - Shenzhen

About the role

Formlabs is looking for a Mechanical Engineer in Shenzhen to help build the hardware of its next-generation 3D printers. The role involves architecting, prototyping and designing the systems of 3D printers and processing appliances, making key decisions that affect product performance and reliability. It is also a technical leadership position within the regional and group teams of mechanical, systems and electrical engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Create innovative solutions to challenging problems and push the capabilities of 3D printing
• Lead the region's and group's mechanical, systems and electrical engineers, designing, reviewing and guiding junior colleagues' work
• Prototype new systems and mechanisms, test materials and research 3D printing challenges
• Design subsystems of a 3D printer or processing appliance for performance, manufacturability and reliability
• Build the 3D printer ecosystem and communicate with vendors, suppliers and team members worldwide

Required profile

• Strong portfolio of previous work with a background in electro-mechanical systems
• Experience with the full product development cycle
• 5+ years of industry experience
• Hands-on approach, able to prototype own designs and work across disciplines
• Effective communication with global partners

Required skills

• Familiarity with thermal systems, optical systems, sensor design, controllers, structures and algorithms
• Knowledge of manufacturing methods for high-volume, high-performance products
• Part design, material selection and manufacturing techniques
• Bonus: polymers and polymer chemistry, electronics and circuit design, PLM/document control, Python programming, industrial design, tool design for sheet metal and injection molding
