Senior Health Data Engineer

About the role

Manulife is looking for a Senior Health Data Engineer in Chengdu to design and implement a common Health Data Model and Health Data Products that give business units ready-to-use, trusted data for AI and analytics use cases. The role leads regional health data initiatives, works with data scientists, AI teams and business leaders, and supports use cases such as Generative AI, Large Language Models and Agentic AI.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and deploy an Asia regional common health data model using the existing ADO platform, governance and standards, and define engineering standards for scalability, performance and reliability.
• Oversee end-to-end delivery from concept to production, including testing, deployment and monitoring, and establish reusable frameworks, pipelines and components.
• Provide hands-on technical leadership, act as the main escalation point for engineering issues, and run code reviews, performance tuning and optimization.
• Integrate compliance and security controls, identify risks around model deployment, data privacy and ethics, and maintain documentation and audit trails.
• Contribute to the Data Engineering Community of Practice and share best practices and reusable assets.

Required profile

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering or a related field.
• 10+ years of experience as a Data Engineer, Platform Engineer, DevOps Engineer, Software Engineer or Technical Expert.
• Leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills; project management and Agile experience are an advantage.
• Understanding of the insurance and/or financial industry is an asset.

Required skills

• Distributed computing principles and hands-on troubleshooting of clusters.
• Azure: ADLS, Data Factory, Databricks, Event Hubs, Synapse Analytics, Azure SQL and Cosmos DB.
• Data streaming (Event Hubs, Spark) and data querying tools.
• Python and Spark; CDC solutions such as Debezium.
• Experience with Alibaba Cloud, AI/BI and/or GenAI is an advantage.
