R&D Engineer - Certification

About the role

ABB is hiring an R&D Engineer for its certification function in Shanghai, reporting to the R&D Principal Engineer. The engineer sets up and runs product tests according to standard testing methodologies, documents the results and acts as the link between the external notification body and the internal technical team during certification.

Key responsibilities

• Work with the project manager and team on certification matters, including filling application forms, understanding product structure and configurations, and writing product descriptions.
• Prepare testing samples with the project team and submit them to external agencies.
• Follow up certification progress and act as the bridge between the external notification body and the internal technical team.
• Escalate certification blocks caused by external agencies and seek management support.
• Summarise manufacturing requirements according to certification coverage and communicate the certification requirements to the factory.
• Maintain certifications and prepare renewals with enough lead time to avoid business impact.

Required profile

• Minimum 2 years of professional experience in product certification, compliance or engineering design.
• Bachelor's or master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation or a related field.
• Ability to work effectively in cross-functional and multicultural teams.

Required skills

• In-depth knowledge of CE directives (EMC, LVD and RED) and UL certification standards, and other international regulatory requirements.
• Experience with EX (explosive atmospheres) or SIL (functional safety) certification is highly preferred.
• English proficiency to read and write technical documentation and international standards.
• Technical competency in product safety and certification, regulatory understanding and technical documentation preparation.
