Digital & Physical Modeler (Senior Modeler)

About the role

GM China Design Studio, a production and advanced design studio, is building a long-term talent pipeline of modelers and senior modelers in digital modeling, surfacing, clay modeling, sculpting and CAM/CNC clay milling. The work is on-site, full-time at the GM China Advanced Technical Center in Shanghai, and is hands-on, individual-contributor work with no people-management experience required.

The studio turns vehicle design ideas into digital surfaces and physical models that teams can evaluate and refine toward production, working with Interior and Exterior Design, Studio Engineering, fabrication and studio operations. Candidates apply with an updated resume and a portfolio of work samples showing form, surface quality and technical problem solving.

Key responsibilities

• Digital modeling: create, develop and refine vehicle interior, exterior and component geometry, translating sketches and reference data into 3D forms with continuous, high-quality surfaces, including Class-A surfacing
• Incorporate engineering criteria and design specifications, prepare accurate digital deliverables and improve existing geometry
• Clay modeling: build, sculpt, refine and maintain interior and exterior clay models, assessing line, proportion and surface transitions
• CAM programming and CNC clay milling: develop roughing, semi-finishing and finishing toolpaths in PowerMILL or similar, set up and operate milling equipment safely, and inspect results
• Coordinate with digital modeling, engineering and machining partners, plan work against milestones and follow data-management and workshop procedures
