Senior Scientist, Organic Synthesis

About the role

IFF, a global leader in flavors, fragrances, food ingredients and health & biosciences, is hiring a Senior Scientist, Organic Synthesis for an onsite role in Hangzhou, China. The scientist leads strategic innovation projects and develops novel chemical synthesis solutions, working with cross-functional teams to turn scientific discoveries into scalable manufacturing.

Key responsibilities

• Lead strategic innovation projects and develop novel chemical synthesis solutions supporting business growth.
• Design, execute and evaluate organic synthesis experiments from laboratory scale through pilot and production scale-up.
• Develop and optimize manufacturing processes using available technologies, scientific expertise and operational resources.
• Troubleshoot reaction and process challenges linked to production and scale-up.
• Collaborate with Process Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality and Regulatory teams to ensure successful technology transfer.
• Analyze competitors and the technology landscape to identify emerging opportunities.
• Provide advanced technical support for existing product portfolios and new product development.
• Drive continuous improvement in safety, process efficiency, product quality and sustainability.

Required profile

• Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry or a related scientific discipline.
• At least 5 years of industrial R&D experience in organic synthesis or related fields.
• Fluent written and spoken English.
• Experience in manufacturing scale-up and commercial production, and preferably in flavors, fragrances, specialty chemicals, fine chemicals or related industries.
• A track record of innovation, patents, publications or successful commercialization projects is a plus.

Required skills

• Strong expertise in synthetic organic chemistry and reaction mechanism analysis.
• Hands-on experience with analytical techniques including GC, GC-MS and NMR.
• Ability to design experiments, analyze data and solve complex technical problems independently.
• Project management skills and strong communication within cross-functional and international teams.
• Knowledge of chemical engineering principles and process development is a plus.
