Senior Mechanical Product Design Engineer – Photonics Platform

About the role

Applied Materials is seeking a senior engineer to lead mechanical and opto‑mechanical design for a next‑generation Photonics Platform in Shanghai. The role spans prototype development, qualification, and mass‑production support, acting as both technical expert and design owner.

Key responsibilities

• Act as technical expert in at least two R&D domains (optics, electronics, motion, system engineering) and lead module qualification, calibration and performance verification.
• Own mechanical and opto‑mechanical design of photonics modules, creating 3D CAD models, 2D drawings, BOMs and GD&T documentation.
• Perform engineering analyses such as hand calculations, FEA, thermal analysis and tolerance stack‑up.
• Define and execute acceptance test procedures, support NPI builds, and collaborate with manufacturing, optics, EE, tooling and supply‑chain teams globally.
• Travel internationally (10‑20%) to support vendor builds and issue resolution.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical, Optical, Electrical Engineering, Physics or related field.
• 6‑10+ years of experience in hardware development, photonics systems or opto‑mechanical design.
• Proven track record in module/system qualification, calibration and performance validation.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work independently on complex system‑level problems.

Required skills

• 3D CAD tools (NX, Creo, SolidWorks or equivalent)
• Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and thermal analysis
• Mechanical engineering fundamentals (statics, dynamics, heat transfer, materials)
• GD&T, BOM creation and tolerance analysis
• Photonics platform knowledge (Silicon Photonics, InP, SiN)
