Piping & Layout Lead Engineer (China)

About the role

The Piping & Layout Lead Engineer acts as the technical authority for all piping design activities in EPC projects, responsible for technical decisions, quality, schedule and cost control. The role is on-site and serves as the main interface with project management and other engineering disciplines to ensure compliance with SAES, SAMSS and applicable regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and oversee piping design (layout, materials, stress, supports) and approve deliverables such as P&IDs, Piping Class Sheets, GADs, Isometrics and Stress Reports
• Resolve complex technical and coordination issues and ensure design quality, constructability and cost optimisation
• Ensure compliance with SAES, SAMSS and international codes (ASME B31.3, API, ASTM), integrating company procedures with client requirements
• Coordinate with Process, Equipment, Structural, Instrumentation, Electrical and Civil teams, provide piping loads, review nozzle orientations and support 3D model reviews (30%, 60%, 90%)
• Lead technical meetings with clients, secure design approvals and approve vendor documents for valves, fittings and supports
• Mentor piping designers and stress engineers and implement QA/QC procedures

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical, Chemical or Petrochemical Engineering
• P.E. or CEng (or equivalent) preferred
• 15+ years in piping design for oil & gas/petrochemical EPC, including at least 2 full-cycle projects as Lead
• Fluent spoken and written English
• Fit for long-term overseas assignments; strong leadership, communication and decision-making in multicultural settings

Required skills

• Proficiency in CAESAR II and SP3D/AVEVA E3D
• Expert knowledge of SAES, SAMSS, ASME B31.3, API and ASTM standards
