Software Engineering Lead

About the role

Formlabs is building the tools that let anyone turn ideas into reality, from cutting‑edge products to life‑saving medical devices. As a Software Engineering Lead you will own the end‑to‑end software architecture for 3D printers and post‑processing equipment, driving both embedded firmware and user‑facing applications.

Key responsibilities

• Own the end‑to‑end software architecture for 3D printers and post‑processing equipment, covering embedded firmware, device control, and cloud layers.
• Lead design and development of real‑time control software for motion, thermal management, and sensor integration on Linux‑based embedded systems.
• Drive development of user‑facing software, including desktop, web, or mobile applications for device control and monitoring.
• Establish and maintain best practices such as code architecture, testing frameworks, CI/CD pipelines, and documentation.
• Collaborate closely with hardware and product teams to define system requirements and ensure seamless integration.
• Build, mentor, and manage the software engineering team, fostering technical excellence.
• Manage the software development lifecycle to deliver high‑quality, stable releases on schedule.

Required profile

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years of professional software development experience, including at least 2 years in a technical leadership or management role.
• Strong expertise in C/C++ development for real‑time or performance‑critical systems, especially in embedded Linux environments.
• Experience designing software architectures for complex electromechanical devices (IoT, robotics, CNC, or 3D printers is a strong plus).
• Familiarity with communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, UART, Ethernet, and Modbus.
• Proficiency with modern software practices including version control, code review, CI/CD, and automated testing.
