Publishing Director, Engineering

About the role

The Publishing Director, Engineering role is a key strategic position within Springer Nature’s publishing programme, responsible for creating and executing plans to grow a global portfolio of journals while leading, managing and nurturing a high‑performing team.

Key responsibilities

• Builds effective teams: create a positive, energetic environment where team members are engaged, learn, develop and see the value of their contribution.
• Portfolio development and management: create and update strategy for a portfolio of journals, including new launches, aligned with strategic priorities and market analysis.
• Drives results: lead implementation of portfolio strategy, ensure new titles launch on schedule and attract high‑quality content.
• Financial acumen: work with VP to take responsibility for business performance of the group.
• Builds networks: develop relationships with external Editors‑in‑Chief, editorial board members and the research community.
• Business development: identify and pursue partnerships with societies, associations and journal owners.
• Business insights: monitor trends in research and publishing, translate them into initiatives focused on Open Science, Open Access and market share.

Required profile

• Excellent management, communication, leadership and team‑building skills.
• Proven experience leading a team in a scientific/academic publishing environment.
• Strong English language proficiency.
• Demonstrated ability to turn market opportunities into profitable business models.
• Deep understanding of the research process, editors, authors and referees as key customers.
• Strong analytical and commercial capabilities.
• Passion for excellence in research and science.
• Significant experience within scientific/academic publishing.
• University degree or equivalent, preferably in a relevant field.
