Exterior Designer (Creative / Senior / Lead)

About the role

GM China Design Studio, a production and advanced design studio, is building a long-term pipeline of exterior designers in Shanghai, from Creative to Senior and Lead levels. The role is on-site and full-time at the GM China Advanced Technical Center. Designers define the visual identity, proportion, stance and emotional character of vehicles and mobility products for China and global markets, working from early exploration through production execution.

Key responsibilities

• Develop exterior concepts, component ideas, sketches, renderings and visual narratives, and explore themes, proportions, surfaces and details aligned with brand direction and customer needs.
• Create and communicate sketches, digital 2D and 3D models, physical mock-ups and presentations that explain design intent and vehicle character.
• Collaborate with sculpting, engineering, fabrication, modeling, product planning and global design studios, balancing creative ambition with technical and manufacturing realities.
• Present proposals in studio reviews and leadership forums, and give feedback to less experienced designers.
• Lead designers define and drive the creative direction of exterior programs, set design strategies reflecting GM brand DNA and China-specific needs, and mentor designers across experience levels.

• Portfolio showing design thinking, creative process, visual communication and exterior design capabilities, free of confidential or proprietary material.
